Three Cheers for Pessimism

Three Cheers for Pessimism

Let a man face facts as they really are, and pessimism is the only possible conclusion.  There is a passion of pessimism at the heart of the human life and there is no ‘plaster’ for it; you cannot say, ‘Cheer up, look on the bright side’; there is no bright side to look on.  There is only one cure and that is God Himself, and God comes to a man in the form of Jesus Christ. – Oswald Chambers

I refuse to be labeled as a pessimist.  I believe I am a realist – and the reality is, if you look at things the way they really are – things aren’t looking too good.

The economy is a disaster.  The Middle East is in chaos.  Africa is worse off than ever.  There are more people in slavery than any other time in human history. Earthquakes and natural disasters seem to be on the rise.  I could go on, but you get the point.

Now before you go pop an anti-depressant – stop to consider the following:

  1. God knows the world is messed up
  2. He sent his Son down here as a solution to the real problem (the depravity of man)
  3. He is coming back soon to set things straight

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4
