When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It!

When You Come to a Fork in the Road, Take It!

This morning I read Psalm 48.  It closes with this line:

For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.

It reminded me of hiking the Inca Trail.  It’s a three-day hike and our team tended to get separated, choosing our own pace.  I remember the guide telling me there were two forks in the trail toward the end.  He told me which way to go, but by the time I was approaching them I had forgotten.

I was getting nervous because I knew I was at the back of the pack.  Did they all leave me?  Getting lost in the mountains of Peru after an eight-hour hike was not in my plans.

I came to the fork and stopped. I looked at the signs.  Neither of them sounded familiar.  Then from behind me I heard, “La derecha.”  Our guide was sitting in some bushes out of view.  Man, was I relieved.

God seems to hide out when we need his direction most.  But I have to remember that even if I can’t see him, he’s there at every crossroad.  I just have to stop marching for a second, get quiet and listen.  He will be our guide even to the end.
