Where Are All The Slam Dunks?

Where Are All The Slam Dunks?

Last night I watched the U.S. Olympic Basketball Team (a bunch of NBA All Stars) soundly whoop Spain.

I came into the game expecting to see tons of amazing off-balance shots, buzzer-beaters and ginormous slam-dunks. I didn’t see much of that.

I was starting to get disappointed halfway through the game thinking, Aren’t these guys the pros I watch on TV? Where’s all the awesomeness?

Then I realized that I don’t usually watch live basketball.  All I ever really watch is the highlight clips on the news. It’s all the amazing stuff crammed into a few seconds. It’s exciting. But when you watch a live game there are lots of missed shots, lots of fouls and lots of sloppy play.

I think sometimes I have those same wrong expectations for life. I hear stories of people who did amazing things, but most of the time those stories are really just highlights of big moments in their lives. Sure they had some incredible accomplishments, but there were probably tons of mistakes and not so glamorous parts. Those parts get left out of stories because people don’t like to read the humdrum stuff.

I have to remember that God is doing great things, but my whole life is not going to be a highlight reel. When I look back over my life there will be some slam-dunks and half-court buzzer-beaters, but that’s not going to be what most of life looks like. It’s probably going to be mostly made up of basic shots combined with some fouls and blunders.  But the game is won that way.  Goal by goal, using the basics.
