Fighting Sea Lions in the Galapagos

Fighting Sea Lions in the Galapagos

I’ve never turned to my wife and said, “Emily, remember that TV we used to have.  We sure watched a lot of good shows on that thing.” I don’t remember most of the shows I’ve watched. But I do turn to her and say, “Hey, remember eating sushi in the Galapagos Islands and having to fight off that sea lion that kept trying to get onto the dock.”

No one can take that memory from us. We can lose everything else – our TV, our scooter, our house – but that experience is ours.  Whenever we remember it, it brings us together just like the experience did.

I’m pretty convinced that one of the most powerful connection tools we humans have is shared experience out of the normal routine.

One of the mottos Emily and I try to live by is: Store up experiences, not stuff.  Travel may not be your deal, but from personal experience I know none of my most memorable experiences came sitting at home watching TV.
