My Fellow Angry Americans

My Fellow Angry Americans

I’m in Guatemala. This morning I was sitting in a peaceful courtyard listening to a bubbling fountain surrounded by flowers when I heard a ruckus coming from the front gate of the hotel. “Hellooooo!” A corpulent lady was shouting at the top of her lungs. Getting increasingly angry that the gate hadn’t swung open in front of her she resorted to something resembling Spanish. “Holaaaa doorooo aahora!” She began rattling the gate violently and continued yelling.

A few moments later an apologetic little indigenous woman ran in and opened the gate for the angry American.  The angry American fired off a few words about how she shouldn’t have to wait to get into her hotel. Apparently she didn’t realize that gate was there for her protection. There is a sad amount of violence in Guatemala.

A little while later I saw the angry American in the courtyard sharing with her team what God had showed her in her morning devotions. Apparently it wasn’t anything about patience or gentleness or kindness.

You won’t hear me doggin’ on America because I love my country. It’s got it’s problems but I still think it’s an amazing place. But I do want to put out a plea to American Christians.

If we aren’t going to act nice because we love Jesus, can we at least find another reason?Like making America look good. I wish the Jesus reason were enough, but I guess it isn’t.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22
