Before You Crack

Before You Crack

My Summit Life team is focusing on margin this week.

The word margin always makes me think of elementary school. “Make sure you keep your writing in the margins.”  The teacher would say over and over, like it was some really big deal.

I was always so careful to never write outside the margins on that wide-ruled school paper. Type-A me would even throw out a piece of paper and start over if I did go outside the margin.

Then one day in middle school I wrote outside the margin. No one called me on it, so I assumed it was ok. I started doing it more.

I think that’s what happens in my life. I never intend to get super busy and overwhelmed. It sneaks up on me. I go a little beyond what I feel comfortable with. A little outside the margins. No one says anything. I look around and everyone else seems overwhelmed and stressed so I figure it’s normal.

I’m gonna say it. I think our “normal” is messed up. We have it all wrong.

We can only do so much before we crack. Is it too bold to say that we are cracking? All of us. I know I am. So I’m systematically reevaluating commitments and dismantling my current workload. I’m only one person. I can only do so much.

Same goes for you Superman and Superwoman. Maybe all the stress we are feeling could be eliminated if we simply started saying no to stuff. Even good stuff. We need time to enjoy this life God gave us.

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:9
