About That Discomfort You Are Feeling

A while back I met a fascinating lady. She and her husband just bought a Bed and Breakfast in Bar Harbor, Maine. They took a major risk and are going after their dreams.

I’m sitting there listening to this lady’s story thinking, This family is amazing.

Then she starts sharing with me how intimidated she is about starting a blog. I’m baffled. This lady and her husband are going after their dream with reckless abandon, taking on a huge risk. But she’s afraid to start a freakin’ blog?

Does not compute.

But you know what, I do the same thing. If God called me to Africa tomorrow I’d be gung-ho about it. But when he called me to Tomball, TX I freaked out. I had to pray for months. Surely God has something else for me…

I have areas I’m really confident in and I’ll risk it all. But then there are little areas, usually ones I’m insecure about, that give me heart palpitations. I was more insecure about moving to a small town in Texas than about moving across the world.

Why am I like this?

I believe that God has given each of us a problem to solve and a unique message to share. There’s a good chance that message or problem to solve is going to require stepping into some uncomfortable areas. God seems to believe we grow most when we are a little uncomfortable. Whether it’s moving to a small town in Texas or starting a blog, God is working on something in your life.

Here’s what I’m learning: If I want to squeeze every last ounce out of the life God wants for me I’ve got to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

They say God doesn’t waste anything, so brace yourself. I’m pretty confident this discomfort we are feeling has to be heading somewhere.

For this is the will of God, your sanctification… (1 Thess. 4:3)
