How to Get What You Want From God Before the Year Ends

How to Get What You Want From God Before the Year Ends

I got some great news yesterday. It’s something I’ve been praying for all year. I had been saying Psalm 65:11 to myself over and over.

You crown the year with your bounty.

And sure enough, God came through with only 14 days to spare.

I was laying in bed last night thinking about how careful I’ve been to be obedient. I pray. I do my best to be generous. I watch my language. I quote Bible verses to myself like they are a magic formula.

That’s all stuff I should be doing anyway, but I try to be really good at it when I need something from God.

It’s hard to not fall into a rewards-based relationship with the Big Guy Upstairs. What’s scary is I often see God giving me good things as a direct result of me being a good little boy.

But the problem is, God doesn’t work like that.

But he does.

But he doesn’t.

I have to constantly remember that God is a mystery. I can’t control him.

Whatever the Lord pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. (Psalm 135:6)

I may pray, give and be obedient and still not see him come through on what I’m asking for.

But at the same time I believe God wants to give his children good things. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Ps. 37:4) He has placed spiritual principles in place. Sowing and reaping. In many ways I can control what good comes my way through my actions.

But sometimes I can’t.

God is infinitely complicated.

Fortunately, trusting him isn’t.

I may never see things I’ve been praying for come to pass, but that doesn’t matter. God does whatever he pleases – including giving grace that we completely don’t deserve.

For that I’m thankful. For that I will trust that he has my best in mind, no matter what he chooses to allow into my life in the last two weeks of 2013.
