That Miracle You Were Looking For

That Miracle You Were Looking For

When I take people on long hikes like the Inca Trail or Mt. Kilimanjaro I always talk to the group about pacing themselves.

It’s rare that people get what I’m saying until about the second day of the hike when they pull me aside and quietly say, “I don’t think I’m gonna make it all the way to the end man. This is killing me. It’s gonna take a miracle for me to finish this thing.”

I like it when people get to this point because they are usually ready to take any advice I can give. There are two things I always remind them:

  1. It all starts in your mind. The human body can tolerate much more than most of us think. If you can get your mind locked in your body will usually follow. There are some exceptions, but I believe most people are capable of much more than they believe. But you HAVE to stay positive.
  2. You don’t climb a mountain all at once. You climb it step-by-step. I’ll never forget something my friend Mark said in passing after climbing a grueling section of the Inca Trail. “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you’ll just put one foot in front of the other.”

I believe we are all capable of amazing things. With hard work and the power of God working in us we can accomplish things people say are impossible.

They aren’t. … with God all things are possible. Matt. 19:26

But I’ve found that God rarely just poofs things into existence. He does it one miracle at a time as we take one small step at a time.

If you pace yourself and take it slow you can accomplish anything.

Get your mind in the right place. Remember that while you are doing what you can, the most powerful force in the universe is doing what only he can – the impossible.

Whatever mountain you are climbing. Financial. Relational. Getting into shape. Take it small, tiny step by small, tiny step.
