Please, Don’t Make Me Go Back There

Please, Don’t Make Me Go Back There

Right after Emily and I got married we moved into a little 2 bedroom, 1 bath house. It had horrible insulation. The windows wouldn’t open. It had plumbing issues. But it had just been remodeled inside and was comfortable. I really liked the place.

When people walked into the house they would always go, “Wow! Didn’t expect to see this based on the neighborhood.”

Maybe it’s because I grew up in Guatemala, but I didn’t think the neighborhood was that bad. But apparently it was. Emily had friends who were afraid to drop her off at home.

We lived in that house until we moved to Latin America.

Last night I had a dream that for some reason we had to move back into that house. In the dream I kept thinking How did this happen? Did I make a mistake? I woke up feeling so defeated.

What’s interesting is, when we moved back from Peru we actually did move back into that little house. It was weird. People said all sorts of stupid stuff about us moving back that made me feel like we were failures.

But I think God used that experience to teach me a lesson.

I always want to be moving forward. Bigger, better, faster. But sometimes that just doesn’t happen. Sometimes it’s in God’s divine plan for us to go in a direction that seems backwards. But you have to be confident that if you are following him – it isn’t backwards.

Because, the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day. Proverbs 4:18

Don’t be discouraged if it feels like you are facing a setback or going in the opposite direction of where you want to be. I’m convinced (and know from personal experience) that if you’ll stay in faith, be obedient, and don’t give up, extraordinary things are ahead.
