Hey! You Aren’t Qualified To Do That.

Hey! You Aren’t Qualified To Do That.

Who Said
I was talking to a guy this week who is helping people plant churches. He told me that a hot-shot pastor started questioning his qualifications to be doing that. It was intimidating to him.

I could relate. I regularly get emails or phone calls from people who either subtly or not so subtly ask me:

  1. What qualifications do you have to be coaching others? Are you certified?
  2. What qualifications do you have to be leading people on climbing expeditions? Are you a certified guide?

I always get intimidated when people start asking me that stuff. Truth is:

  1. I don’t have any qualifications. I have a Master’s degree in counseling. That’s it.
  2. I’m not a certified guide. I’ve led dozens of trips over the past ten years, but I’m not a certified wilderness person or whatever they call them.

But here’s the deal. I’m doing it and I’m not certified!!

We get way too hung up on having other people certify us. For some reason we think that if someone else can say we are qualified to do something then we really are qualified. If we’ve got the paper we must be legit.

That is absurd. Because that means you are only legit if some person says you are legit. Who’s the hot-shot who gets to decide what hoops you’ve gotta jump through to be legit? I’ve met lots of people who are certified but are definitely not called to what they are doing.

Here’s the deal though. I’m certain God called me to this, so I’m moving forward.

Yes, I’m seeking advice, Yes, I’m seeking training. That’s wise to do. But I’m not gonna sit around waiting for some dude in an ivory tower to tell me I’m ready.

God called me – so I’m going to go. Period.

Stop waiting around for someone to tell you you are good enough or ready. Don’t let the ‘professionals’ tell you you don’t have what it takes. If God called you – do it.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13
