When They Say You Don’t Have What It Takes

When They Say You Don’t Have What It Takes

When I was in middle school my dad felt God calling us to be missionaries in Guatemala. With no training or missions experience dad stepped out in faith and obeyed. While there, dad started a missions organization, another thing he had no training or experience doing. Twenty years later that organization has hundreds of missionaries in over fifty countries.

Needless to say, I grew up believing that pretty much anyone could do anything if God was calling them to do it. We just have to be crazy enough to obey the call.

On Thursday I was reading a book written by the director of a mission agency that’s about the same size as the one my dad started, but way older. The author’s tone really bothered me. It was condescending. So I went to look at his organization’s website. On one of their pages for recruiting missionaries I read the following in big bold letters:

Few people have the experience or skill to be a modern missionary.

Heck ya! Sign me up! I’m always motivated by people telling me I don’t have what it takes!

I laughed when I read that. That is the complete opposite mindset I learned from my dad.

My dad believes that anyone – literally anyone – can be a missionary or any other thing God calls them to be. If God calls you, you have what it takes. It’s not really about your effectiveness – it’s about obedience. Training is important, but that’s not the core issue.

In my experience there are lots of people who are willing to do just about anything. The problem is, most have been told they aren’t qualified or don’t have what it takes.

Listen. If God is calling you to do something then do it. If you need some training, get it. But don’t let not having training make you feel disqualified. Ignore people who say you don’t have what it takes.

God has given you everything you need to do what he has called you to do.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. Acts 4:13
