What To Do When God Is Silent

What To Do When God Is Silent

When I was in my junior year of college I was struggling. I worked 40+ hours per week to pay for school with cash. I took 15 hours of classes. The financial crunch was difficult.

Once day in the throes of my financial ordeal a smiley man called me over from across the campus courtyard at school.

“How would you like the rest of your education paid for and a salary of $3000 per month until you graduate?”

Heck ya! “Please tell me more.” I told the smiling man.

As I drove away from school I called my dad. It was settled. All my problems were solved.

“Dad, I’m joining the military.”

There was silence. My dad was in the military and loves the armed forces. I figured he’d be pumped. I explained the details, sure he was going to sign on.

After a few more seconds he came out with it. “Joël, it sounds like you might be looking for direction.”

Duh dad! “Of course I am. School is killing me and I need to know what I’m doing once I get this degree. I feel stuck. This will solve it. I’ll know what’s next.”

Another brief pause. “Well, the military might be a good option. But I’ve found God doesn’t usually give us new directions until we’ve completed our last assignment. Have you done that?”

The last thing I was certain I was supposed to do was finish college. I still hadn’t done that. My dad reminded me that I wasn’t stuck. I was just in a season of preparation. Until I had completed that task I didn’t need to be looking for other instructions. I had my marching orders. God would make it clear what was next – once I completed the last thing I was supposed to do.

Sure enough, the following year God gave me a vision to start doing what I’m doing now. It came at the perfect time. God wasn’t hiding his will after all.

If you are doing your best to honor God and seek his direction but he seems silent it’s probably because you are on the right path. You just need to keep going in that direction. God will make it clear when a course change is needed. He’ll do it at the perfect time. For now, we just need to stick with obeying the last thing he told us to do.

Don’t get discouraged if God seems silent. Stay the course. God is preparing you for a bright future ahead. Stay faithful.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
