Who Is Really Giving the Beating Here?

Who Is Really Giving the Beating Here?

A friend of mine is in the process of implementing some strategic changes at his organization. They are changes that need to happen, but change is always hard for people. He’s bewildered at all the resistance he is facing. People are not a fan of his new ways. He told me all sorts of stories about what he’s facing.

As I listened he kept saying, “I’m taking a beating every day.”

I thought it was interesting to hear him say that, because I interpreted his experience completely differently. I didn’t see him taking a beating. I saw him breaking down walls.

The first guy through the wall is always the bloodiest. So, yes, he’s suffering. The pain is real. But I recommended he try something: Reframe the pain. See it as a result of being an active agent of change, rather than a passive recipient of a beating.

It’s all a perspective thing in many ways. You may be taking a figurative beating right now for doing something right. If it’s for bringing a good change, then maybe it’s time you shift your mindset. Rather than see yourself as a victim of the system, see yourself as someone who is slowly but surely breaking through walls and bringing change to the system.

You are only a victim if you choose to be. But I believe that in Christ we always come out on top (Romans 8:37). Even when we are getting pounded on every side, if we are striving to bring God glory, we aren’t victims – we are wall-breakers who are slowly but surely bringing light and life to a world that needs change.

Be a leader. Break through the walls of resistance with God’s love, even if it hurts in the process.

Now thanks be unto God, who always causes us to triumph in Christ, and makes manifest the fragrance of his knowledge by us in every place. (2 Cor. 2:14)
