The Bizarre Sex Scandal I Saw Coming

A few years ago a friend invited me to meet his famous pastor. The minute I shook the pastor’s hand I got a weird vibe. Something felt off. I mentioned it to my friend and he laughed.

“Bro, my pastor is super influential! He’s a man of God. You are so paranoid!”

I started second guessing myself. Maybe I had just eaten some bad corn flakes that morning. The guy was really influential. If something was off surely it would have been revealed by now.

A few months later it came to light that the pastor was involved in an ongoing, super-bizarre sex scandal.

I have at least ten other similar stories I can tell of times I got a strange feeling something was off and sure enough, it really was.

Now, here’s the problem with the strange feeling thing. You can’t do much with it. You should always believe the best about people. And you sure as heaven can’t go around pronouncing judgment or speaking ill of a person or situation just because you got a weird feeling. Most of the time I can’t even figure out what it is that’s wrong until after the fact. All the truth comes out and I’m like Oh duh, of course!

The goal here isn’t to brag about me having some super-human, sixth sense. I mention this because we live in a world that is full of lies and facades. You can’t really trust anything you see or hear. We only ever get a portion of the truth.

Fortunately, in John 16:13 Jesus said he was going to send the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. I think that one of the ways he does that is by giving us a “sense” about something. Some are better at picking up on that sense than others, but I’m convinced we all have access to another level of discernment. I’m guessing you have had a few of those insight moments.

There’s no way I can explain in a 437 word blog exactly what that looks like. It will be different for every person. But what I want to encourage you to do is start being attuned to that momentary check you get. If something doesn’t add up, it probably really doesn’t add up. If something feels odd, don’t just blow it off. Move forward, but do it wisely.

As more and more lies abound in our world we must be alert. We can’t afford to just take everything we read, hear or see at face value. Ask God to lead you in truth. Then stay alert, because he will.

Stay connected to the Holy Spirit and you can move boldly into the future knowing he is guiding you in all truth.

Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Matthew 10:16
