When You Are Scared of Heights But Climb Mountains Anyway

When people find out I’m terrified of heights I always get very shocked responses:

“That’s impossible! You love to climb mountains!”

“You must be kidding. Surely you just think you are afraid of heights.”

Here’s my typical response:

“Yes, I love to climb mountains. But I hate heights. But the mountain isn’t going anywhere so I stay close to it and as far away from the ledge as possible. But I am definitely afraid of heights.”

Listen. It’s not the fearless people who do seemingly impossible things. Fearless people just get themselves killed because they think they are invincible.

It’s the people who cautiously act in spite of their fear that do amazing things. Those people have figured out that if you’ll stay close to the Mountain, stay away from the ledge and use the right gear – you’ll make it to the top and live to tell about it.

Fear is healthy and normal. Just don’t let it paralyze you. Lean into God. He is very, very strong and isn’t going anywhere. Stay away from the ledge and temptation. Then put one foot in front of the other. Crawl if you have to. Just don’t stop. Keep pressing on up the mountain.

…for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Tim. 1:7
