The Secret to Retiring Rich

The Secret to Retiring Rich

A few years ago I took a team to Guatemala, Central America and met a man named Joe. He was a super nice guy, but I couldn’t figure him out.

“So are you a missionary Joe?”

“Nope. Just a retired guy living in Guatemala.”

“But you are doing all this mission-type work building houses for widows and stuff.”

“Yup. Just doing what I can.”

“So, you ARE a missionary.” I retorted.

“Nope. Just a retired guy.”

Joe and his wife Cindy became heroes of mine. They are just normal people from Texas who decided they wanted to spend their retirement serving people in Guatemala. They get no special funding for mission work. They just go around helping people in need as best as they can. They even built a city park in their backyard.

I don’t know anything about Joe’s financial situation. But I’m convinced that dude retired rich. Really rich. 1 Timothy 6:17-18 rich.

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.

Joe and Cindy could be living in a safe suburb or golf community in Florida. But they’ve figured out safety isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

They decided that rather than be safe and comfortable they are going to change the world at the prime time of their life.

Before you retire you need to go visit Joe and Cindy. They’ll show you what it means to really retire rich.

Actually, scratch that. If you are a living human being of any age you need to visit Joe and Cindy. They’ll inspire you to live for what really counts.
