When You Have to Sacrifice

When You Have to Sacrifice

I was only weeks away from quitting my steady job at Southwest Airlines to become a full-time missionary. No more steady paychecks. I’d be living off donations. I was a little nervous, but was certain I was supposed to do it.

For some reason I went with a friend to a graduation at a Bible school in Dallas. While I was there the founder of the school got up and said she thought ten people were supposed to give $1000 each to the school that morning. My heart sank. I knew I was supposed to be one of those people.

I had $5000 saved, the most money I had ever had in my life. It was my backup plan just in case God didn’t provide. (But I never would have admitted that.) But I knew God was calling me to make the sacrifice. After some complaining and debating with God I finally wrote the check and one-fifth of my nest egg was gone. Then over the next few weeks I ended up giving almost all of that money away.

I think about that moment a lot. It felt like a huge sacrifice at the time. But since then I’ve come to believe that you cannot sacrifice for God. He won’t let you. The minute you think you’re making a sacrifice he’ll open up the windows of blessing and you’ll be blown away. You’ll look back and laugh at what you thought was so hard to do.

If you feel God is calling you to do something that requires sacrifice I think you should do it. I know that it’s scary, but don’t be afraid of what you might lose. I’ve seen over and over that obedience is always worth the sacrifice.
