Why You Should Stop Thinking So Much

Why You Should Stop Thinking So Much

During any given week I will talk to a dozen or more people who want to start something new. They’ll send me their business plan to look over. Some of the plans are quite elaborate and outline a 10-20 year growth plan. They might even have a really slamming website with a cool logo and really expensive business cards.

It’s clear they have spent many, many hours thinking about what their new thing will look like. But I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon. Most of those people never actually start on their idea.

There’s a difference between a dreamer and a doer. Doers do. They have figured out that at some point you have to stop strategizing and thinking and just start taking little steps. Set a date. Fill out the application. Make the call. Do one thing every day that moves you toward your goals.

Strategizing is safe and fun. You can live in a dream world of possibilities. Doing is risky. It’s messy and you have to stay flexible and fluid. You never quite know how things are going to work out in the real world.

And that’s why I believe faith is more about doing than believing. It’s one thing to think, God, I believe you can do this. Then sit around hoping and dreaming about what it will be like if God comes through on your wildest dreams.

It’s something completely different to say, “God, I believe you can do this, so I’m gonna go ahead and step out… and I really hope you come through ‘cause I’m in major trouble if you don’t!”

I believe true faith is about taking action, based on godly wisdom, because you believe. It’s becoming a doer, not just a dreamer.

I think that’s the kind of faith Paul is talking about when he says, And it is impossible to please God without faith. Hebrews 11:6

He’s talking about being brave and stepping out. That’s the kind of faith that gets things moving in the right direction and actually pleases God.

Maybe it’s time to stop dreaming and actually start doing. Be brave. Get some counsel. Have a short strategy session. Then start moving forward one step at a time. I’ve got a feeling you’ll be blown away at what happens when you start having that kind of faith.
