When People Just Don’t Get You

When People Just Don’t Get You

I contacted a friend of mine recently to share an idea I had. I explained to him my vision for something completely new I’m trying to do. I was certain he’d jump on board and be so glad I decided to share the idea with him.

Instead I got an email back from him. He said he wasn’t so sure about the idea and he actually didn’t really like it. He was really nice about it, but I could tell he was not a fan of my idea.

For the next several days his email was ringing in my head. I really respect this guy and wanted his approval. I actually laid awake for several hours one night questioning if I was completely off track.

After stewing about it for a few days I finally shared with Emily how his comments had affected me. She smiled and simply said, “He just doesn’t get it. You have already proven it works.”

When she said it I realized she was right. I have already proven that the idea works. I’m doing it now and seeing amazing results – it is changing peoples’ lives. To top it off, the most important thing is, I really feel like it was a vision God gave me to do.

Then it hit me. I had just fallen into the very mistake I warn other visionaries about ad nauseum.

When God puts a dream in your heart to do something that is going to bring him glory, but will be completely new, there’s a really good chance a ton of people won’t get it. Some might even resent you for trying to change things. They just can’t see it like you do. But that’s because God gave you the vision – not them.

They’ll say things like:

“Who do you think you are? What makes you think you are gonna be any different than the rest of us?”

“But this is the way we’ve always done it.”

It’s easy to let their words stop you in your tracks. But please, don’t let them. Remember the words of my sweet wife: “They just don’t get it.” Don’t resent the naysayers – just listen to any legit advice they might have and then move forward courageously.

Go after what God put in your heart. Even if it’s never been done before. Even if others don’t get it.

Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Is. 43:19
