The Simple Tip That Will Take You Far

The Simple Tip That Will Take You Far

The first time I hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu everyone warned me about how difficult the second day of the four-day hike would be. You cross over a 14,000ft pass called Dead Woman’s Pass. It’s a very steep and arduous climb.

I do the hike nearly every year now so I’m pretty confident. But I always warn the teams that come with me that they need to pace themselves on the first day. But there are always a few who go flying past me and arrive at camp an hour or so before me.

Nearly every time we get to camp I have a team member discretely pull me aside and say, “I don’t think I can make it tomorrow. Today nearly killed me.”

I always tell them they’ll make it. They just need to learn a hiking secret that I’ll show them in the morning. The next day just before our team heads out I pull the worried team members aside and teach them the secret hiking method.

I tell them. “First, you stand up straight. Then square off your feet.” They all do.

“Next, you take your right foot and put it in front of the left.” They all give me a suspicious look, but comply.

“Next, you take your left foot and put it in front of the right one.”

After they repeat the process a few times they are pretty annoyed. “Well duh! You are just telling us to put one foot in front of the other. That’s too simple.”

I smile. “Exactly, more often than note, it’s the simple things that take us the furthest.”

I’ve never had a team member not make it to the top of that pass. They all succeed. Then they look back from the top of that mountain, down into the valley, and are amazed how far they got just putting one foot in front of the other.

I’m convinced that secret hiking tip can be applied to pretty much every area of your life. You can do anything if you’ll take it one step at a time. Debt. Relational struggles. Education. A dream to start something new. It all comes taking it one step at a time.

All you need is enough courage to take first next step. Then you take the next one. And the next one. That’s faith. It’s stepping out and believing God will give you exactly what you need to get where you need to go.

Be brave. Take the first step.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6
