When Your Life Has Been a Bunch of Failures

When Your Life Has Been a Bunch of Failures

While I was in college I started climbing mountains. The first mountain I tried to climb was Mt. Kilimanjaro. I got sick on the mountain and never made it to the top. The next year I tried to climb Mt. Elbrus. I got caught in a blizzard and never made it to the top of that one too.

A few years later I felt called to write a book about vision. I wrote one, then sent it off to some friends to read. Their feedback was far from stellar. So I wrote another one. It got the same response. I felt like writing was a failed venture for me.

Around that same time a ministry I was in charge of had to close down. Failure.

When I look back at my life I have some pretty epic failures. But what’s really crazy is, what I’m doing right now is all related to those failures. I lead people on mountain climbing adventures. I write books. I run a ministry. If I had stuck with trying it once I would have assumed all that stuff wasn’t my calling. Fortunately, I tried again. God blessed it and here we are today.

If there’s something you tried and failed – losing weight, writing a book, starting something new, marriage – I think you should try again. You learned a lot last time. Take what you learned, go in eyes-wide-open, and move forward again humbly. Just because it didn’t work out last time doesn’t mean it won’t work this time.

Be brave. Try again.

Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm. – Winston Churchill
