You’ll Feel Better Once You Give Up

You’ll Feel Better Once You Give Up

A few weeks ago the publisher I really wanted for my new book rejected my manuscript. They said they loved the content, but not enough people know who I am for them to feel confident publishing anything I’ve written.

Up until a few years ago this would have devastated me. I would have been discouraged for days. But over the past few years I’ve begun to realize that when God decides its time for a dream he put in my heart to happen – if I’m obedient to what he has asked me to do – nothing can stop him. One touch of his favor can change everything in an instant.

Like the time that, based on a prompting in my gut, I guessed at the email address of a best-selling author and invited him to come hiking with me. He got the email and was so excited about my idea that he gave me money to start Summit Leaders. And voila! the dream that had died a thousand deaths came to life in one day.

Or the time I was sitting on a plane, not wanting to talk to anyone, but felt I was supposed to strike up a conversation with the guy next to me. That guy became a great friend and he helped connect me with people I never could have met on my own.

The crazy thing is, all those providential events up there happened after I had finally stopped pushing. I had essentially given up trying to figure out how God was gonna make the dream happen. I didn’t give up on being faithful to what I was supposed to do, but I did give up striving. Then kaboom! God made it happen in a way I never saw coming and faster than I could have done it on my own.

The same thing can happen to you. I’m nobody special. (Just ask that publisher. Hehe.)

If you’ve got a dream in your heart that just doesn’t seem to be happening – a business idea, a ministry, restoration of a relationship – I encourage you to just give up. Don’t give up on the dream. Don’t give up on staying faithful to care for what’s in front of you. But give up on pushing, manipulating, and trying to figure out how God’s gonna make it happen. You’ll feel a lot better once you do.

Remember, if your dream really is from God, he wants it to happen even more than you do and he wants the credit when it happens. He knows how to get you where you need to be. He can make it happen in an instant. He’s unstoppable like that.

So relax. Stay faithful. Stay alert. When the time is right, it will happen.

Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. Ps. 46:10

The essence of surrender is getting out of God’s way so that He can do in us what He also wants to do through us. – A.W. Tozer
