Remember: It Won’t Always Be This Way

Remember: It Won’t Always Be This Way

This morning Elise woke up at 4:45am crying. Usually when this happens I just give her a little milk and she quickly falls back to sleep. But not this time. She just kept crying. For the next two hours I held her as she cried off and on. I was never able to figure out if the pain is from teething or allergies.

Around 7:00am, as the sun began to brighten the sky outside my window, a thought hit me: It won’t always be this way.

She won’t always be crying about allergies or teething. She won’t always be small enough for me to lift her out of her crib. She won’t always want me to hold her in the early morning hours. She is growing up fast. Soon I’ll long for these days.

Life is constantly changing. Seasons come and go. Good seasons. Hard seasons. They don’t stay forever. Things get better. Then there’s another struggle. But that too will pass. Things will get better again.

Holding my crying daughter this morning reminded me of the importance of gratitude for this moment. Every season holds a blessing and a burden. Don’t focus on the burden. Keep your eyes on the blessing. And always remember in good times and bad:

It won’t always be this way.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. (Ecc. 3:1)

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thes. 5:18)
